Squirrels + Cars = not a good combination

This morning I had been bustling around the house getting things in order for the day and actually felt I was on top of it all. *hurray*

I even had the kiddos out of the house and in the mom mobile by 7:30!

After dropping Spencer off at school, it was on to get Nate to the middle school.

I made my usual turns and as I made one last turn to get on the road for the middle school a tiny little squirrel scampered out into the road.

I was not zooming along this morning as I *cough*might normally do*cough* I slowed down and he/she went scampering back into the woods. Phew!

Nate was finally dropped off, and I decided to turn on our only talk radio station here and then entered our neighborhood.

Now I live in an area where there are quite a few new and old trees. Where you find lots of trees one will find a lot of squirrels. (That is when mama hawk has not eaten them.)

Anywho, I am doing the 25 mph and all of a sudden this cute little squirrel on my right darts out with a nut in his/her mouth. I slowed down more but swerved because the last thing I wanted to do was hit it.

Yes, I am one of those drivers who swerves out of the way for animals.

Today I am sad to say that I was not able to miss this little creature.

As I swerved back to the left there was a horrible thump, thump.

Yep, you know what that was.

With a very heavy heart I looked in the rear view mirror and saw the poor little thing on the side of the road – dead.

Instantly tears welled up and I was reduced to tears.

Why?! Why?! Why?!

This is all I could ask myself as I drove home and parked the mom mobile in the driveway.

I feel simply awful, I mean I did swerve and try to miss the fuzzy little critter.

Ugh… this is so not the way I had wanted to start my day.
