Crumbly Apple Pie - Recipe

Now that fall is here why not make an apple pie?

A great apple pie for you to enjoy with a friend, share with your family or simply all for yourself. (I won't tell)

Crumbly Apple Pie

Amount Measure Ingredient -- Preparation Method

Crust:
1 cup all-purpose flour
1/2 teaspoon salt
1/3 cup shortening -- chilled solid
1/4 cup ice water

Filling:
7 medium apples -- granny smith are good -Peeled, Cored & Thinly Sliced
1/2 cup sugar
1 teaspoon cinnamon
1/4 teaspoon nutmg
1/4 teaspoon salt

Topping:
3/4 cup brown sugar
3/4 cup all-purpose flour
1/2 teaspoon nutmeg
1/3 cup butter -- chilled and cut into small cubes

Place oven rack in lowest position. Preheat oven to 400 degrees.


To Make Crust:
  • In a medium bowl, mix together flour and salt.
  • Using a pastry blender, cut shortening into flour mixture until coarse crumbs form.
  • Add water, 1 Tbs. at a time, tossing with a fork, until a dough forms.
  • Shape into a disk, wrap in plastic wrap and chill for 30 minutes.
  • On a floured surface, using a floured rolling pin, roll dough into a 12-inch circle.
  • Fit into a 9-inch pie pan. Trim excess dough, leaving a 1-inch overhang; make a decorative edge.

Filling:

Mix together all ingredients and spoon into crust.



Topping:
  • In a small bowl mix together brown sugar, flour and nutmeg.
  • Using a pastry blender or 2 knives, cut butter into brown sugar mixture until coarse crumbs form.
  • Sprinkle apples evenly with topping.
  • Bake pie until topping is lightly browned and filling is bubbly, about 35 minutes. If pie is overbrowning, cover loosely with aluminum foil.

Per Serving: 415 Calories; 17g Fat (35.8% calories from fat); 3g Protein; 65g Carbohydrate; 4g Dietary Fiber; 21mg Cholesterol; 284mg Sodium. Exchanges: 1 1/2 Grain(Starch); 1 Fruit; 3 1/2 Fat; 1 1/2 Other Carbohydrates.

Serving Ideas:

  • whipped cream
  • vanilla ice cream on the side

NOTES :
  • You can use a frozen 9 inch pie crust instead of making the crust.
  • Which is what I did this time around.
  • It does save a bit of time. :)
